If you ask me, if i have resources enought, i prefer Gnome, if i have no enought resources i prefer 'fluxbox'. But sure i like to test and use some others to. A good trick is to use at least 2 weeks(full time) an environment or manager. Take also an look on http://themes.freshmeat.net/browse/56/ for some themes, take also an look on the website of that environment and look if there are already an package that provide some additional themes. And finally take also an look on http://xwinman.org/ to know what are and desktop environment and what are are window manager.

To use differents desktop environments at the same time:
Log in in GNOME and open an terminal. There you type startx kde -- :1 & You get then KDE running, to switch then between these both you do [CTRL][ALT][F7] and [CTRL][ALT][F8]. No to add windowmaker also, you do startx windowmaker -- :2 & and these is then on the F9
To see which you have installed you do it with wmlist:
Some time you no more know how you need to close an windowmanager. What you can do is start it without the &, for example startx fvwm2 -- :1. When you go out of it, you go back to F7 and do then CTRL+C in the terminal where you have start it.
